Sunday afternoon Quade spent a long time writing down a list of anything he could call a success in his working life. Not just the big things, of which there were very few, but also the smaller things. Times when he’d advised clients to be wary of companies and products that had turned out to be full of glitches and problems or even malware, spyware, and phishing hacks.

It took him many hours of dredging back through his memory and looking through his old journals, but he finally managed to put them all together into what he considered to be quite a strong resume.

It took him almost as long to write a three-paragraph letter to his grandfather, copied to his brother and cousins, explaining why he was leaving the company. It was very difficult to remain cold and professional and not to complain or sound petulant, but he finally decided he’d nailed it and sent that off. Only then did he make a list of companies he’d genuinely helped and sent off his CV to the head of HR at each business, copying it to whoever it was he’d dealt with so successfully in the past.

Then he turned off his laptop and cell phone and went to bed. Since he was there alone, he slept in the room his mom and aunt had used, which had two proper beds in it. The other bedroom had two bunk beds, which were still fine, but he decided bigger was better when he was alone.

The next morning he considered checking his e-mails and switching his cell phone back on but decided against it. He knew his grandfather wasn’t going to be pleased, and it was most unlikely he’d hear back from any of the companies he’d sent his resume to for at least a week.

“I’m not going to sit here biting my fingernails for a week. I need to learn to be myself, not my grandfather’s puppet,” he told himself sternly. So he dressed in his oldest jeans, hiking boots, a flannel shirt, and a thick sweater, and then collected an old backpack from the bedroom closet. Quade put several bottles of water in it, a can of soda, two apples, a banana, a plastic bag to put his trash in, and then made himself two thick ham, cheese, and tomato sandwiches. Finally he dropped his cell phone in his pocket but didn’t turn it on.

With the backpack over his shoulder, he locked the cabin and headed for the waterfall.

Likely it had a real name, but to him, his brother, and cousins, it’d always simply been “the waterfall.” It was a hard, uphill hour’s walk, which had ensured their moms wouldn’t follow them there, and it was the first place they’d always hiked to on vacations here as boys.

With his new sense of perspective, he wondered if his mom and aunt had been perfectly capable of following the boys but had enjoyed being alone together and away from Grandpa as much as the boys did.
